Migraines come in many different forms, none of which are an experience that migraineurs — people who suffer from migraines — look forward to. If you or someone you know struggles with migraines, then you have probably considered or talked to someone about what treatment options look like.
Sadly, effective treatments for migraines are far and few between. However, at Elevate Chiropractic in Fort Collins, we’ve had some great success with helping people find relief from both irregular and chronic migraine symptoms alike.
Today, we will examine the relationship between chiropractic care and migraine relief by learning more about what a migraine is, examine research on the effects of chiropractic care on migraines, and explaining the ways in which we work to help you find relief.

What Is A Migraine?
According to Peter Goadsby, Professor of Neurology and a migraine expert at King’s College in London, “Migraine is an inherited tendency to have headaches with sensory disturbance. It’s an instability in the way the brain deals with incoming sensory information, and that instability can become influenced by physiological changes like sleep, exercise, and hunger.”
Migraines are a complex condition with symptoms that range from headaches to vomiting to photophobia and beyond, and they are the third most common illness in the world (click here to learn other incredible statistics about migraines). They are painful, difficult to predict, hard to treat, and oftentimes debilitating.
Migraines may last from a couple of hours to a couple of days, and symptoms can vary from person to person. Even though a classification was created in 1988 by the International Headache Society, people are often lumped into one of two main categories — migraine with aura and migraine without aura — and then treated on a case by case basis.
Case Studies On Chiropractic Care And Migraine Treatment
Although no definitive conclusions have been established between the relationship between chiropractic care and migraine relief, there is a lot of promising research out there. Additionally, migraine symptoms, such as headaches, are regularly and successfully treated as a part of a chiropractic regimen.
Chronic Migraines Are Successfully Treated Using CMST
In 2011, research published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine suggested that chiropractic spinal manipulative treatment (CSMT) was the source of migraine relief in the case of a 52-year old woman who had suffered from chronic migraines for years.
Suffering from intense monthly migraines that lasted for 12 hours and sometimes longer, this woman struggled with headache pain, nausea, photophobia, and temporary visual impairment.
An initial chiropractic evaluation found limitation in the range of motion in her neck and spine. Using the Gonstead method to adjust the position of the vertebrae in her neck and spine over a 9-week treatment period, the woman ultimately re-gained her range of motion, reported reduced symptoms and claimed she felt a greater sense of wellness.
At a 6-month follow up, the woman reported that she had not had a single migraine episode since the study ended.
A New Body Of Evidence Suggest Chiropractic Care Helps With Migraines
More recently, a 2017 study from the National Institute for Health Research outlined that when considering a large body of work, instead of individual case studies, that there was value in conducting further research due to the preponderance of evidence showing positive, although varied, outcomes for patients.
Over a wide body of studies, the authors found that variances on the following positive outcomes were relatively common.
- Reduced frequency of migraine
- Reduced duration of migraine
- Reduced severity of migraine
- Reduced nausea, dizziness, and tinnitus
- Reduced aura
- Reduced visual disturbances
- Improved segmental ranges of motion
