When we think about chiropractic care, most of us immediately think of back and neck pain treatment for relief or chiropractic care regimens designed for unfortunate people who are recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash or other impact-related trauma event. It is not often that we visualize someone with far more distinct and specific conditions receiving relief and an improved quality of life through quality chiropractic treatment.
Today we will examine a case study in supplemental chiropractic care in the mitigation of symptoms brought on by Parkinson’s Disease — a rare, but extremely debilitating illness.
At Elevate Chiropractic in Fort Collins, we love being able to share uplifting stories about an improved quality of life with you, and we would like to remind you that ongoing chiropractic care, whether preventative or reactive, is an important part of long-term health and wellness. What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nervous system. Due to a lack of the neurotransmitter dopamine, physical “excitement” responses take place where and when they shouldn’t, causing symptoms like tremors, muscular rigidity, abnormal movement patterns, and inhibited speech. People who suffer from Parkinson’s are typically middle-aged and older, with the disease often becoming more and more serious as you age. Although there are medications that have been shown to improve symptoms and slow the progression of the disease, there is, sadly, no cure.
Chiropractic Case Study Overview
The case study that we are examining today comes from a 2014 publication of the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine and looks at the situation of an 81-year-old man who had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s 12 years earlier. The man suffered from tremors, predominantly in his left hand, and a rigid stooped posture and shuffling gait that inhibited his balance to the point he needed a walker. He began receiving a variety of treatments including chiropractic care and manipulation. The man’s chiropractic adjustments were done in a standing position to attempt to stimulate better responses in the position that he struggled the most with.
After some time, the patient began to report subjective analysis that he felt better. He believed that his hand tremored less, that his balance was improving, and that his speech was returning to a more controlled and able state. A medical examination found that after his initial round of intensive treatment, he stood more upright by roughly 10 degrees and had great enough balance improvement that he was able to begin walking without the use of his walker. Incredible improvements that came from a targeted care regiment that included quality chiropractic care. One of the most important pieces of note in the study outside of his physical improvements was that the man reported feeling a greater sense of body awareness, balance, and a general sense of the improvement of his condition, once again demonstrating the importance of chiropractic treatment for an improved quality of life and general sense of well-being.
The Importance of Lifelong Care
In the case of the 82-year-old man with Parkinson’s, he believed so strongly in the effectiveness of the adjustments and chiropractic care he had received that he stayed on as a patient with his doctor, embracing the philosophy of chiropractic care that we hold so dear here at Elevate Chiropractic — that a pro-active approach to your health is the best way to gain optimal results. Achieving that kind of long-term well-being is an ongoing process, not something that someone can achieve and then leave.
